IT asset portfolio rationalization for a leading UK based insurance company

The idea
Rationalize the IT assets in the organization.

Return on idea

Rationalized assets leading to a significant reduction on IT costs.

Organizations are expanding their businesses as rapidly as ever to cope with the increasing demands from market and the competition. This often results in a proliferation of the IT applications and infrastructure that are enablers of these business opportunities. The explosive growth of the IT assets of the organization over time might not always be the best optimized and inline with strategic business vision of the organization. Thus, organizations are beginning to look at rationalizing these IT assets with a view to reduce costs and complexity associated with the IT asset base.

The client

A leading insurance company in the world.

Before
The Insurance Company had several applications performing similar business functions. With increase on pressure to cut IT costs, the company sought to rationalize their assets. An analysis of the applications and the associated personnel revealed that 85% of the resources worked on sustenance of applications.

How Wipro helped

Wipro gathered an inventory of IT Assets, including their business criticality, cost of maintenance. Following this information gathering exercise, we analyzed, grouped and score the Assets based on an accepted criteria (see diagram below). The assets were rationalized by ‘eliminating’/’enhancing’/’leaving as-is’ based on the analysis conducted.

After

A significant outcome of the project was that it reduced maintenance costs for the client by a phenomenal 22%.
