Architecture assessment for an insurance company

The idea
Assess the Technology Architecture, as this has significant impact on business.

Return on idea

Assess the idea using a structured approach and recommend appropriate changes to deliver a stable solution.

The client

A leading insurance company in the world.

While embarking on a mission critical application development, it makes business sense to have an expert opinion of the architecture. This enables the organization to take corrective actions, if necessary, at the start of the project. Very often, this means an assessment of the Architecture with certain capability assessment criteria laid out by the Expert and the Client; examples of such criteria being:

How well does the application manage change
How well does it integrate with other applications and what are the complexities involved;
How does it align with the business goals;
How does it address any seasonality factors in traffic; etc.

How Wipro helped

Wipro executed an engagement for an Insurance company with an objective of building confidence in the Architecture and Design of the solution recommended. The mandate was also to identify and classify any technology risks and evolve mitigation strategies to address it.

To facilitate this assessment, the Pugh Matrix, a Six Sigma tool, was adopted. The Pugh matrix is a tool used to facilitate a disciplined, team-based process for concept generation and selection . Several concepts are evaluated according to their strengths and weaknesses against a reference concept called the datum (base concept). The datum is the best current concept at each iteration of the matrix.

The team Independently identified architectural/design decisions for the following:
Application architecture
Operational architecture
Security architecture
Use case validation for architectural/HLD conformance

After
With a Service Oriented Platform, the organization gained by attaining a high degree of interoperability in the landscape. New and enhanced services could be plugged into the eco-system in order to deliver additional benefits.

A schematic representation of the recommended architecture is provided below
