Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN)
Retailers, suppliers, producers and markets worldwide use unique product codes to identify their products, product cost and other similar details, facilitating easy trade. It is also used for tracking products, monitoring promotions, maintaining inventory, etc. There are at present two separate worldwide standards, Universal Product Code (UPC) and the European Article Number (EAN), for identifying products.
More than 80 countries around the world use EAN-13. The two key exceptions being the US and Canada. The fallout is that suppliers from other countries have to re-mark and re label with UPC to be able to sell their products in the U.S. and Canada.
Uniform Code Council (UCC) has given the date of January 1, 2005, by when all North American companies must change their databases to accept and store the 14-digit GTIN structure. The GTIN conversion will help eliminate this cost out of the supply chain.
By updating databases, systems and related applications, retailers and trading partners will be able to accept the complete family of EAN/UCC data carriers. The ability to accept and transmit all GTIN data structures will enable them to conduct efficient global trade and utilize all the tools and business solutions supported by the EAN.UCC System.
