Software Quality Assurance (SQA)

Process definition for verification and validation

The idea
An improved testing method by setting up an effective verification & validation process can reduce defects in the production system and improve the speed-to-market.

The client

A leading insurance provider in the US.

The business challenge
The client was facing problems with increasing number of defects after every monthly release cycle. Resources were blocked in fixing production defects, thus affecting other new releases. This in turn impacted the delivery schedules and resulted in considerable slippage. Continuous changes in requirements affected the scheduled quality assurance (QA) plan, thereby affecting quality process in its entirety.

The solution

The Wipro team first conducted an 'as-is analysis' of the existing testing practices to identify major gaps in the existing system. Over 33 practitioners were met and inputs taken from them to assess the existing processes and practices.

The Wipro team evolved a new testing process framework. In doing this, the Wipro team followed the principle of defect management which looks at early detect detection and pro-active detect prevention. The solution focused on capture of defects early in the development life cycle.

The team included several best practices while defining the new testing process framework. Guidelines were defined for unit testing and integration testing with clear entry and exit criteria, activities to be performed and the roles & responsibilities of practitioners during verification and validation. Defect prevention activities were defined to facilitate early error detection and containment. The team prepared dashboards for monitoring project progress, performance of testing during each of the release cycles and the training that the practitioners underwent.

Business benefits
Improved testing process
Reduction in the number of defects found in production lessens bug-fix costs
Reduced system test execution cycles and the early planning of test & release activities also helped reduce the load on testing resources and increased their availability and utilization. Improved project monitoring and effort utilization.
The dashboards prepared for project management provided clear visibility on the project progress
A roadmap was prepared for institutionalization of the quality processes within the IT organization
