Release Management - Software Process Improvement

SCRM consulting for streamlining release management process

The idea
A release management strategy to facilitate the seamless transition of products from the point of request initiation to complete deployment.

The client

A leading retail chain in the US.

The business challenge
The client had deployment challenges arising out of multiple releases in various phases of deployment across the retail chain. There was an overlap in the rollouts of various releases leading to challenges for comprehensive regression testing of each release combination. It was a tremendous task to provide multi-platform support for various store activities involving registers, back-office, kiosk, wireless devices etc.

Also, configuration management issues arose due to sharing of software components across various devices & channels, multiple vendors and geographically distributed development teams. The client was unable to adhere to release standards during emergency releases and quantify quality risks associated with each release. There were frequent issues in setting up a test environment that closely mimicked a production environment.

The solution

Wipro defined a new framework for release management and followed a stepwise approach in implementing this.

The Wipro team first concentrated on analyzing the existing gaps and on documenting an implementation approach to address the high priority gaps. This activity lasted for a period of 4 weeks during which the team conducted 20+ facilitation sessions with practitioners. 42 process gaps were identified across the existing release management processes. The Wipro team then documented a recommended approach to address 12 of the most critical gaps.

In the second phase of 16 weeks, the Wipro team implemented the new processes spanning areas like software configuration management, build management, software audit & workflow management, unit testing & code coverage and environment management. The team transitioned process knowledge to 30+ associates across 5 IS groups.

Business benefits

80%+ reduction in man days lost due to environment preparation issues
75% reduction in the effort required for the preparation and execution of white-box and black-box unit tests
Code coverage exceeds 80% during unit testing
The turnaround time for preparing store and host environments and for building and packaging new releases was reduced by 50%
90% functional coverage of business and system requirements by implementing automated and manual test scenarios
Manual effort was reduced by 65%
