On Chip Firmware
With advent in semiconductor processes and newer tools, more and more logic and memory gets packed on SoC / ASSP devices. Many semiconductor devices have more than one processor core embedded on a single die or a single package has multiple chips (MCM) each carrying a processor. This is true more so in the case of those targeted as consumer peripheral devices where the attempt is to pack as much functions and features on as little real estate. This often requires on chip firmware for compliance, and / or to provide better consumer experience (e.g. 'power on' to 'ready to use' state).

Being on chip, the software needs to be absolutely error free and robust as silicon spin is expensive. Working with various embedded processor cores such as ARM, MIPS, etc., for several years has helped Wipro master the art of designing, developing, and testing the same in pre-silicon verification environment using co-simulation, C / SystemC models and in FPGA-based emulation systems.

Wipro's expertise pertaining to on chip firmware covers:
  • Boot strap
  • RTOS bring up
  • Peripherals and I/O drivers
  • RAM / Flash-based file system
  • Boot loader
  • Power On Self Test (POST) and diagnostics
  • ROM / RAM-based execution
  • Protocols and applications - porting, development, customization / optimization
