ESL-based Prototyping
Traditionally prototyping uses programmable logic (FPGAs / CPLDs) integrated into a system board with a hook-up to a PC / server running the interface software. The key challenges in this approach are:
- Capacity of a single programmable device - Multiple devices are used to implement the complete SoC. This brings in the complexity of design partitioning and interface timing
- Frequency of operation - This is typically further reduced when multiple devices are used
- Limited debug capabilities
- Development time of the components and board and the interface software
ESL-based prototyping offers a development methodology that uses software models of the actual components of the system and integrates them into a standard development environment to develop a virtual system / prototype / platform. The methodology cuts down on the development time of the prototype by offering off-the-shelf models for many of the components and a development / debug environment that is familiar to most software developers. It is also independent of the design partitioning issues and frequency of operation and offers a very high visibility into the system for debug. Many tool vendors also offer hook-ups with standard debuggers. It is however limited by the MIPS that it can simulate.
The methodology starts off by modeling the key components of the SoC (CPU / BUS architecture / standard peripherals / custom accelerators) as either timed models / untimed models. They are then integrated into a system level environment to create the virtual prototype. This can be a standalone environment using languages such as C / C++ / SystemC etc or on a tool vendor provided development environment such as Platform Architect from CoWare, Comet from VaST and SoC Designer from ARM.
Key benefits of working with Wipro:
- Leading service provider in embedded software and hardware design services
- Strong background on system modeling and virtual prototype development both as a standalone environment and also using tools such as Platform Architect from CoWare and Comet from VaST
- Key partnerships with the tools vendors such as VaST and also with IP vendors such as ARM and Tensilica
All these together enable us to leverage upon different methodologies and technologies to tailor a solution to the customer's requirement
