Energy trading has come a long way since FERC Order 636 created this category close to a decade-and-a-half ago. Dramatic growth in the late 1990s was followed by an equally dramatic decline following the collapse of major energy merchants in 2001. With close regulatory oversight, deregulation, and the participation of new players like hedge funds, markets are seeing improved liquidity and better price transparency.
