Application of Wipro’s Productization expertise for an Embedded Integration Development Environment

The client
A world leader in digital signal processing and analog technologies.

The challenge
The client was integrating many interdependent software components running on multiple versions of hardware together to enable DSP development on various DSP platforms. This end product (an Embedded Integration Development Environment) had a very high field error rate (> 1500 bugs). The client needed to reduce the field error rate and also the test cycle time which was close to 40 days. The product had major releases in the past and the current release needed automation in aid of regression testing.

The solution

Wipro deployed test engineers at the client location to understand current processes and the technicalities of the entire range of software and hardware components used by the client. After the study the team put together an extensive plan for putting in place the requisite technical resources, identifying the skill sets, developing the ‘ideal’ profile and sizing the bandwidth needs and possible ramp up plans in consultation with the client.

Our team of engineers created a bi-directional traceability matrix to analyze coverage. The existing test coverage was around 5% and needed to be extended. The team wrote test cases to ensure 100% coverage and also developed a methodology for test case selection for each release. Test cases were also written and executed towards integration and system testing. The dependencies between various components pertaining to each release were evaluated and verified. Simulators test activities were undertaken to test the simulator features for all the major product releases. Regression activities were performed across releases. Our team selected and used various test automation tools and utilized the orthogonal array principle to reduce the test cycle time and bring the product up to scope so as to go into production.

The benefits
725 bugs were detected in system testing
The test cycle time was reduced from 40 days to 8 days
The field error rate was reduced from 1508 to 48
Many testing methodologies, including exploratory testing were effectively utilized.
Identified and proposed a flexi design for automation.
Productivity improvements were identified and suggested after employing six sigma techniques.
Vulnerable components were identified and corrective actions were suggested by carrying out exhaustive analysis of customer reported issues.

Customer quote
“No doubt, this is the most robust, highest quality release that we have produced. Much of this robustness is the result of your efforts in ensuring we have gone through a comprehensive and rigorous system test cycle for the product. Robustness of tools is ranked as the number one criteria for embedded developers in choosing tools. Thanks for your efforts in making significant improvements to the quality of our tools.”
