Integration testing for GSM based BSS NE reduces time and testing effort for the customer by 35%.

The customer

A leading telecommunications product vendor.

The challenge

This customer has developed a GSM based Base Station Controller, releases of which have been offered to the market at regular intervals. Each release introduces new features and operational enhancements. Ensuring that the basic operational behavior is not altered, remains a cause of concern for the release manager involved in each release.

The solution

To regress the NE for existing behavior and compliance with standards, an in-depth understanding of the functions of the BSC is required. For the latest release of the product, a test suite comprising 11 test plans containing 141 test cases is written. Majority of these test cases is automated using Tcl/Tk and Expect scripts. The team of 24 test engineers, over a span of 3 years has performed regression testing for various releases of the NE. Performing verification and validation for a number of releases has helped the team identify any operational inaccuracy in every new release.

Automation of 92% of the test cases has resulted in a reduction in time and testing effort by nearly 35%. This has gone a long way in ensuring a high quality deliverable to the customer
