A Fortune 100 company uses a data mart solution to integrate multi-system, multi-location data

The customer
Our customer is a Fortune 100 company who is a leader in the delivery of equipment and services to the Power Industry.

The challenge
The organization had an expanding portfolio of packaged power products and services and a growing global customer base. The challenge lay in transforming the large amount of data- distributed in various systems across the company, globally - into business intelligence.

The solution

A team of 25 consultants from Wipro was involved in this project. Since the project involved a very high level of complexity in dealing with different data sources the entire warehouse team was classified into three broad categories:

Base operations
Infrastructure
Project teams

Many data warehousing efforts were carried out in parallel. The teams spearheaded the following five different Data warehousing initiatives:

Strategic sourcing: This pooled purchasing data from 16 operational systems

Business metrics: This defined and managed quality metrics

MSD Data Mart: This analyzed shipment data
Quality Metrics:This analyzed data on business performance
Employee ODS: This provided a single source of employee data in a standard format

The Corporate Information Factory (CIF) was employed to build the Data Warehouse and Data marts. We evolved a data workbench to handle the requirements of the architecture. The following technologies were used:

Hardware:Sun Solaris
Data Mart and staging database Oracle 8.0.5
Data ETL: Informatica, SQL* Loader, PL/SQL programs
OLAP Analysis: Oracle Express, Oracle Discoverer, Visual Basic, Excel

Our unique onsite-offshore Model enabled the company to execute the project on-time, on budget. Development time was reduced through the use of standards, templates and reusable procedures.
