The customer
Our customer is a large water and wastewater services company in the UK, with 12 million customers. The area served is approximately 5,000 square miles.

The challenge

In light of deregulation shaping the utility industry in UK, customer wanted to identify high profitable zones. However, the costs associated with leasing, clean water extraction, treatment, distribution and supply are captured in various systems at different granularity. Due to the spread of costs into multiple, disparate systems and captured at different granularity, they were not able to do profitability analysis across various resource zones, water pressure zone and sewage drainage area catchment.

Some of the project objectives were:

To improve the understanding on where costs are incurred
Find where value is created
Inform management decisions on pricing and competitive positioning
Identify cross subsidy areas within the current integrated appointed

The data warehouse solution is to provide several benefits to our customer as supply chain buying savings, key performance indicators for strategic sourcing at corporate level and key performance indicators for make at business group level.

The solution

Wipro re-engineered the entire existing data mart to extract the cost related data from 14 different sources automatically, using Informatica PowerCenter, centralized the business rules to avoid any interpretation errors, and enabled historical data storage and analysis. Wipro also updated the business objects universes to make them compatible with new data model and provided additional reports that were required.

As part of this project an additional infrastructure with all asset information was created in terms of AIS and IDS.

The following technologies were used:

Hardware: IBM RS 6000/AIXun Solaris
Data mart and staging database: Oracle 8.0.6
Data ETL: Informatica power center 1.7.2
OLAP Services: Business objects 5.0

Currently Wipro is using its onsite/offshore model to provide support and maintenance services for AIS, IDS, value chain analysis and integrated management information systems data marts.
