Design, develop and implement data warehouse solution to ensure better ROI for a large electric utility company

The customer
Our customer is a large electricity utility company, which generates, transmits and distributes energy to millions of industrial and household customers across Western United States

The challenge

The customer initial efforts to develop a local data mart viz., customer information data mart with another software services provider ran into trouble and resulted in large-scale data quality issues and severe performance problems. The customer wanted help to fix these problems. As the project progressed, customer also felt a need for a long-term partner to provide support and maintenance of the data marts.

The solution

Wipro with its expertise in data warehouse solutions participated in helping the client with the problems of data quality and performance issues. Subsequently we partnered to provide the design, development and implementation of three other data marts; capital costing data mart, time administration data mart and key performance indicators data mart.

The following technologies were used:

Hardware: Sun Solaris

Data ETL: Platinum tools, PL/SQL, SQL bulk loader, Informatica power center 1.7.2
OLAP services: Business objects 4.1, VB application on WinNT webserver, Coldfusion, Macromedia, front end application using java

These data marts help customer bench mark operational performance against the industry standard, pinpoint the bottlenecks, effectively track capital investments to ensure better ROI, analyze the electricity usage by customer type to identify usage patterns, cross-sell opportunities, reduce payment defaults and optimize IT resources usage for higher business impact.
