Application security framework for a leading retailer

The client
The client is the one of the world's largest food and drug retailers, with annual revenues of approximately $38 billion. Based in USA, the Company employs more than 250,000 associates and operates approximately 2,300 retail and drug stores in 31 states, under several banners. Their IT infrastructure contains more than 350 software applications, ranging from productivity tools to mission critical client/server and Web enabled applications which run across thousands of computing devices running Windows, Unix-, Linux- and Mac-based platforms

The challenge
Consolidation and automation of the individual identity lifecycle of over 250,000 users presented a formidable business challenge in managing the complexity and the costs associated with an access control infrastructure. The presence of disparate systems (including legacy applications) complicated matters further.

The solution

The solution involved Integration of the SUN Identity Management suite of products, the development/configuration of connectors and adaptors which synchronize user profiles across various platforms and technologies like ACF2 (Mainframe applications), PeopleSoft, UNICRU (Third party application), Oracle internet Directory, Windows NT and Windows 2003 applications.

The solution provided key identity and access management functionality for the target systems:
Single Sign On across associate applications
Real time User ID, Email ID creation at hire
Password synchronization across disparate systems
Delegated Administration and helpdesk
User self account management

Business benefits delivered
The solution reduced identity and access control infrastructure costs and reduction in user management costs.
It allows for higher levels of security of resources through centralized policy management.
It ensures consistent and error-free user provisioning and de-provisioning.
It provides a platform for user-account self-service to associates.
Also, freed up IT human resources and financial resources for other projects.
Finally, enabled logging / auditing of security events to strengthen security monitoring
