| Significant cost savings for a US electricity giant, by implementing a data warehouse for analysing capital expenditure |

| |
| The challenge |
| If implementing ERP systems was the chief priority of CIO's in the last decade, their latest endeavour is to extend ERP architectures to include more advanced reporting, analytical and decision support capabilities. Our client is one of the lowest-cost electricity producers in the US, with almost 1.5 million residential, commercial and industrial electric customers. With 8,000 employees in the United States, our client operates in multiple states. The SAPProj (SAP Capital Reporting) Project was commissioned by the client, with the specific goal of simplifying the analysis of capital spending and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) spending. |
| |
| The solution |
Summarized capital and O&M reporting by project / investment reason was a challenge to obtain in SAP. Long runtimes, inflexible output formats and job crashes were frequent occurrences for corporation wide reports. To overcome these limitations and to present capital expenditure information to users in a concise form the SAPProj data mart was initiated. Data warehousing tools and techniques were identified as the best tools to extract information that would satisfy the stated business requirements. |

Wipro's proven track record in the data warehousing area, and an ongoing project with similar specialization for the client were the key factors for the project win. The Wipro team was involved from "Start to End" of the project. Wipro teams participated in the requirements capturing, architecture design, sizing and estimates, analysis and design, development and unit testing, system testing, user acceptance testing support and implementation support. Additionally, Database administration and facilitation were also handled completely by the Wipro team.
The interfaces between the three components of the SAPProj Datamart (Source Data (SAP), Transformed Datamart and the web server) were seamless from a user standpoint. The data from SAP is extracted and stored or manually entered into a data mart, which is updated on a schedule and agreed time frame. The front-end browser will then utilize the stored data to provide the drill down and view the summarized capital and O&M reporting at any organizational / departmental level. Ability to view variances by period was also incorporated. Wipro has automate the data extraction process and audits have been established within the automated interfaces to minimize ongoing support costs. |
| |
| The benefits |
The key benefits of the SAPProj Datamart to the client were 1) Saving substantial user time in extracting reports, 2) Better decision making facility for all business users, 3) Performance monitoring and measurement at the operations level and 4) the System being easy to implement, inexpensive to maintain and more scalable to add new functionality. |
