Key Performance Indicators, at a mouse click - Wipro's impressive data warehousing solution

The challenge
Information technology has breached the barriers created by distance and cross-functional complexities with respect to identifying and monitoring performance standards across distribution business for utilities. However, managing the performance and profits across multiple business units and levels of management is no mean task. It was this challenge that motivated one of our clients to implement a web-enabled dashboard, to view "Key Performance Indicators" (KPIs) across the corporate spectrum, from meter-readers to the senior management. The client is part of a trans-national group and is one of the lowest-cost electricity producers in the US and operates in multiple states.

The solution
There was no consistent KPI reporting tool to identify key performance indicators for the power distribution business. Information was gathered manually and manipulated inconsistently across the business units. The business process involved was time consuming, inconsistent and did not help in identifying new business opportunities.

The envisaged dashboard was to be supported by a corporate-wide data repository (data mart) for non-financial (statistical) data used to calculate the KPIs. The dashboard and data repository would then be flexible and scalable to accommodate the addition and/or removal of KPIs over time as conditions warranted.

Wipro's proven track record in the data warehousing area, and an ongoing project with similar specialization for the client were the key factors for the project win. The Wipro team was involved from "Start to End" and participated in the requirements capturing, architecture design, sizing and estimates, analysis and design, development and unit testing, system testing, user acceptance testing support and implementation support for the Phase I release which covered 15 KPIs. Database administration and facilitation were also handled completely by the Wipro team. Wipro is at present involved with post-implementation support of monthly loads, and is also participating in the development of Phase II KPIs on the database side. The interface between the three components of the KPI dashboard (source data, KPI datamart and the web server) was seamless from a user standpoint. The data from source systems is extracted and stored or manually entered into a data mart, which is updated on a scheduled and agreed time frame. The front-end dashboard will then utilize the stored data to provide the drill down and view / measure the relevant KPI's. Data extraction is automated and audits have been established within the automated interfaces to minimize ongoing support costs.

The benefits
The main benefits of the KPI datamart dashboard to the client included identifying cost centre outflows, performance monitoring and measurement at the operations level, better management of construction, new connections, metering, and O&M related activities, which led to a higher level of customer satisfaction, revenue, and cost savings and benchmarking and identifying opportunities to improve customer satisfaction goals.
