A leading oil and gas company implements a service oriented architecture solution for use in LNG supply trading and marketing

The client
The customer is the gas division of a leading oil & gas major, involved globally in the entire petroleum value chain

The challenge

The primary business need is to design and develop a quality database for LNG for use in storing information about global LNG sources, markets and facilities to review the feasibility of all supply scenarios.

Prior to the development of this application all the LNG quality related data was managed through Excel spreadsheets. This was a person-dependent process and had all the problems associated with a manual system. The data had to be sent to several technical specialists for calculations. Since all the data was maintained in excel sheets, no data repository existed. This made coordination, data integrity and data security causes for concern. The data integration between different plants was also non-existent. Reporting was a tedious process with retrieval of data for ad-hoc reporting becoming a resource and time intensive process.

The solution

Wipro was involved in the end-to-end design and development of a web based application in .NET for managing the global LNG data. This internet based secure application can be accessed world wide by valid business users of the client over HTTPS. The service oriented architecture principles were used to make available to the consumers the functionality through machine and language independent components. The access to various application modules was strictly role based and controlled using in built authorization mechanisms. All data transfer between various application layers was accomplished using XML confirming to SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) protocol, this allowed any non .NET client to avail the web services offered by the application.

The key modules in the project that were captured, manipulated and validated for LNG assessment were:
LNG liquefaction plant
LNG re-gasification terminals
LNG sources and composition
LNG shipping fleet information
LNG contract system
LNG reporting including adhoc and standard reports

The benefits
The client obtained a secure web based system for complete management of data critical to LNG marketing supply and trading. The system eliminated manual entries thus freeing up valuable resources and time
The system enabled the process to shift from a person dependent local spreadsheet to a global and centralized standard based automated solution.
Data interchange between business units and plants was now a seamless process with no concerns on data integrity and security.
