A key Work and Asset Management data warehouse helps in vital decision making process

The challenge
Payback assumptions for Water Utilities in the investment appraisal process are on the basis of anticipated risk reduction and greater certainty. This can be achieved through informed and value based decision-making at the sub-regional level.

In order to gain greater strategic advantage, one of our clients engaged Wipro to implement a data-warehousing model known as Value Chain Analysis (VCA). The client is a leading Water supply and Wastewater services Company in the UK. They have over 12 million customers and provide services such as underground pipeline and networks, integrated waste management solutions and maintenance & facilities management.

The solution
The VCA project began with the aim of developing the ability to understand costs at the sub regional level across the company. Pilot analysis was developed leading to a wider scope of costing the Thames value chain at resource zone level. The aim of the VCA project was to replace the manual extraction with automatic process using Informatica Power Centre ETL tool. The VCA consisted of two phases; phase -1 provided the key deliverable of a working sub-regional cost model containing one year data. Phase -2 automated the process of extraction of the data from various source systems and enhanced the granularity of the data to monthly. It is also provided with forecasting and year to month reporting.

Wipro's proven track record in the data warehousing area, and its position as a valued development pool partner, clinched the deal. The Wipro team participated in the requirements capturing, architecture design, sizing and estimates, analysis and design, development and unit testing, integration and system testing, user acceptance testing support and initial post implementation support before handing over to Application Support team.

The VCA data mart will interface with multiple source systems like Peoplesoft, Capex Management System, CIS, and TWUL property information. The data sources include Oracle databases; MS Excel spread sheets, Peoplesoft etc. The data from the different sources will be integrated into a common data store before being populated into the VCA data mart. End user analysis will be through ROLAP reporting.

The extraction of data from the various source systems; the cleansing and transformation and subsequent "publishing" of the data in the Directory will be performed using the Informatica ETL Tool PowerCenter. A major goal of this approach was to automate the process such that the data can be refreshed at regular intervals and manual time-consuming preparation of data can be reduced to a minimum.

The benefits
The main benefits of the Value Chain Analysis to the client included helping management in understanding where costs are incurred; helping management in making decisions on the pricing and competitive positioning; on time completion of the project despite very aggressive time scales; high quality deliverables despite constantly changing requirements; and Reduced cost of development and support due to onsite / offshore global delivery model.
